Constantia Wine Tour

What to expect

South Africa’s wine heritage starts here- It is a city escape into magnificent mountain countryside, producing a wide range of iconic, premium wines of world class quality, only 15 minutes from Cape Town city centre.

We take you on a journey discovering the historical importance of this wine valley and the new and picturesque suburb we have known to love today. All the farms are close together, ensuring we cover as many estates in the day as possible. Each farm has its own unique selling point and charm, but one thing they all have in common is fantastic wine and superb attention to detail. Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia, Steenberg Vineyards, Constantia Glen Wine Estate, Beau Constantia, Buitenverwachting, Constantia Uitsig, Eagle’s Nest and Silvermist all await you in the valley.

At the start of the Constantia legacy, land was granted to governor Simon Van Der Stel. He planted 10,000 vines, naming the farm after the VOC (Dutch East India Company) ship, Constantia. The original property comprised 763 hectares, stretching from the modern-day Constantia to Dieprivier. Groot Constantia has a whole lot going for it including a beautiful estate, hundreds of years of history, wonderful food and of course the most incredible range of wines. What makes the estate really special is the unique experience it offers for its visitors, including an exquisite chocolate and wine pairing and a visitor route experience. The experience includes entrance to the historic Manor House museum, the original Cloete Cellar, a cellar tour, wine tasting and Spiegalau Crystal wine glass.

From old to new we visit the newest addition to the Constantia Valley wine route – Beau Constantia. A rolling green embankment is the first thing you see as you walk down from the parking, but what grabs you is the squared, brick structures, sitting alongside huge glassed companions at the top of the hill. It is quite simply breath-taking.

The view from inside the venue is even more impressive. With the wine farm situated on the north-facing slope of Constantia Nek, you are treated to panoramic views of the Stellenbosch and Helderberg Mountain ranges and over False Bay as far as Hangklip. Jaw-dropping.

Of course, Constantia has more on offer than the wine farms, with a huge amount of restaurants and bars to choose from too! We conclude the tour with an afternoon meander through Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. Exploring the many shady trails and taking in the panoramic views from the canopy walkway, Kirstenbosch contains over 7000 species of plants from southern Africa, truly a scenic splendour and a beautiful end to an unforgettable day.
