Overberg Experience Tour
What to expect
An early start as we depart Cape Town at 05:30 taking the famous Sir Lowry’s Pass over the Hottentots-Holland Mountains to the picturesque Overberg region and to our first stop of the day Gansbaai. Upon arrival, we meet at the Great White House in Kleinbaai where you will receive breakfast and register your wetsuit size. Before we hit the waters a pre-trip safety briefing about what to expect during the trip and a biological background on great white sharks is conducted. Going Great White Shark Diving in South Africa and more specifically a trip on the Slashfin, is a combination of goose bump thrills, education and relaxation on a luxury boat in the company of experienced experts and researchers! They will show you how to distinguish between a male and female shark and how to identify a specific shark by its unique dorsal fin and scars. The 20 – 25-minute boat trip to where the activity is to take place, is by itself an exhilarating adventure. The boat anchors for 2 hours, but this depends on shark activity, conditions, as well as number of divers. Weather permitting, we take a quick trip through the infamous Shark Alley before heading to shore. Lastly, a debrief in the Great White House with soup and bread to warm you up.
After the adrenaline subsides, we visit our friends at Fatbike Tours in De Kelders. This is the ultimate ride from near Grootbos nature reserve down the mountain to the top of the Sand Dunes. The trail to the dunes is special, running on a narrow sandy horse trail through the Fynbos. After the dunes we will pick up a 4×4 trail down to the beach. A quick freshen up and then we will continue to the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Enjoy a wine tasting at one of the estates in the region that boast unique terroir driven wines and lunch at the Benguela Cove overlooking vineyards, mountains and lagoon. If you would like to taste something with more of a kick, we visit the Fynbos Distillery located at the Sir Robert Stanford Estate. The distillery is owner operated and their products are bottled and labelled by hand and only by skilled women. The Sir Robert Stanford Estate, which has over 100 years of history behind it has been lovingly restored and the distillery uses the copper kettle to produce our Husk Spirit range.
From there we take a scenic drive to the town of Bettys Bay for a visit to the Stoney Point African Penguin Colony. Clarence drive with its high twisting coastal road leading from Cape Hangklip to Gordon’s Bay is breath-taking. Not only does this route offer wondrous vistas out to sea, across sweeping bays and vertically down into transparent sapphire shallows, it offers a perfect setting for the entrance to the “Riviera of the Cape”. After a day of scenic splendour, we arrive back at the hotel at 18:30.
